St. Clement's Church

Aaron James, guest conductor and program curator

This program highlights the chameleon-like musical personality of Orlando di Lasso. Lasso wrote in seemingly every genre over the course of his long life: sacred and secular, music for students and professionals, from sublime to ridiculous, in Latin, Italian, French and German. In the course of this concert we will hear love songs, drinking songs, songs on nonsense syllables, a song about a fat goose, and a bizarre and incomprehensible setting of Psalm 137 that was banned by Jesuit censors. But we will also hear a series of autobiographical motets from the final years of Lasso’s life, when the once-famous composer was afflicted by financial difficulties and an unexpected stroke, bringing out a heightened seriousness and emotional intensity in his final works.
