Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber is considered the most innovative violinist of the 17th century. Yet the attention his instrumental works has gotten has also cast a shadow over his vocal music, which is equally (if not more) brilliant. In this concert, Biber’s masterful Requiem in f minor will be preceded by some of his most innovative motets and sacred cantatas, demonstrating his compelling recipe for deepening the Catholic liturgy: the mixture of dramatic singing and Bohemian violin virtuosity.
This concert is supported by a special donation by Margaret Magee. The Biber Requiem is dedicated to the memory of Jack Schuster (1930-2025).
